Top Reasons To Make A Daniel Fast Your Primary Diet
Introduction: What is a Daniel Fast And Why Should You Consider It?
The diet includes fruits, vegetables, pulses (beans), whole grains, and water. In particular, the diet is heavily based on pulses, which are used as a primary source of protein.
In the book (Daniel 1:12–16), there are five verses that describe the diet:
Verse 12: “Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.”
Verse 13: “Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.”
Verse 14: “So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.”
Verse 15: “And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.”
Verse 16: “Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.”
Pulses are the edible seeds of plants in the legume family. They grow in pods and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recognizes 11 types of pulses: dry beans, dry broad beans, dry peas, chickpeas, cow peas, pigeon peas, lentils, Bambara beans, vetches, lupins and pulses nes.
Health Benefits of The Daniel Fast
The Daniel Fast is a type of fasting diet that is based on the biblical account of Daniel and his friends’ refusal to eat the rich foods and wine provided by King Nebuchadnezzar. The diet consists of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes.
The Daniel Fast has many health benefits such as: weight loss, improved cholesterol levels, improved blood sugar levels and decreased inflammation.
Essential Foods to Eat on a Daniel Fast
Here are foods that are approved while on the Daniel Fast:
Beans and lentils. All types are permitted.
Beans are a type of legume that are high in fiber, plant-based protein, and carbs. Lentils are another type of legume that can be used in place of meat. It’s also high in fiber and plant-based protein.
Nuts and seeds. All types are permitted, except those with added salt.
Nuts and seeds are an excellent source of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and unsaturated fats.
Fruits and vegetables. All types are permitted.
Fruits are at the top of the food pyramid. They are packed with so many different vitamins and nutrients that they are considered a super food. Vegetables are another important part of a healthy diet. They provide minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and so much more. When you think of fruits and vegetables, it’s important to remember that there is no limit to what can be included.
Oils and fats. Only vegetable oils are allowed, and only in small amounts, such as to saute vegetables. Olive, avocado, peanut, coconut, grapeseed, canola, walnut, and sesame oil are all approved oils. A diet rich in healthy fats is essential for a healthy life. Some doctors say to avoid seed oils.
Whole grains. barley, brown rice, buckwheat, bulgur, freekeh, millet, oats, plain popcorn, quinoa, rye, sorghum, spelt, teff, whole grain pasta, whole wheat, and wild rice are approved.
Unleavened bread. Whole grain breads and flatbreads made without yeast, sugars, or preservatives are permitted, but not recommended. Unleavened bread is the most ancient of breads. It is typically made with flour, water, and salt. The dough is baked or cooked on a griddle or in some instances fried. Unleavened breads can be flatbreads or loaves and come in many different forms including matzo, Indian chapati, Ethiopian injera, Mexican tortilla,. I do not include any breads in my Daniel Fast.
Herbs and spices. All fresh and dried herbs and spices are permitted and encouraged as flavor enhancers, though salt should be used sparingly. For centuries, herbs and spices have been used to enhance the flavors of food. By using fresh or dried herbs and spices in recipes, you can create dishes that are healthier, tastier and more beautiful. You may find you like the taste of vegetables with minimal additional spices.
Beverages. Water should be your main beverage. Unsweetened plant beverages such as 100% fruit juice are permitted in small amounts, but are not recommended. Water is essential to any diet. Our bodies need water to function properly and if we do not drink enough, our bodies will send us signals such as thirst, headaches and fatigue. Water also helps with weight control as it fills up your stomach and curbs your appetite.
Vitamins and supplements. All are permitted as needed. If you use protein powders, they should be minimally processed and meet the diet’s guidelines. For the past few decades, Americans have been obsessed with diet. In recent years, Americans have been consuming more protein supplements and many people see it as the key to a healthy lifestyle.

The Daniel Fast is a type of fast that is meant to be taken for spiritual reasons. It is not meant to be taken as a diet, but it makes for a better diet than the Standard American Diet (SAD).
The Daniel Fast does not allow any type of bread, grains, alcohol, coffee, tea, processed foods (such as white sugar and white flour), or animal products (such as meat or dairy).
The Daniel Fast also recommends limiting the intake of fruits and vegetables to an amount that will not produce too much gas in the digestive system.

How Long Is the Daniel Fast?
The Daniel Fast is typically followed for 21 days. This length of time is based on Daniel’s decision in chapter 10 to deprive himself of “pleasant food,” meat, and wine for three weeks while he sought God in prayer.
