Essential Foods to Eat on a Daniel Fast

Here are foods that are approved while on the Daniel Fast:

  • Beans and lentils. All types are permitted.

    Beans are a type of legume that are high in fiber, plant-based protein, and carbs. Lentils are another type of legume that can be used in place of meat. It’s also high in fiber and plant-based protein.

  • Nuts and seeds. All types are permitted, except those with added salt.

    Nuts and seeds are an excellent source of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals and unsaturated fats.

  • Fruits and vegetables. All types are permitted.

    Fruits are at the top of the food pyramid. They are packed with so many different vitamins and nutrients that they are considered a super food.   • Whole grains. barley, brown rice, buckwheat, bulgur, freekeh, millet, oats, plain popcorn, quinoa, rye, sorghum, spelt, teff, whole grain pasta, whole wheat, and wild rice are approved.

  • Unleavened bread. Whole grain breads and flatbreads made without yeast, sugars, or preservatives are permitted, but not recommended. Unleavened bread is the most ancient of breads. It is typically made with flour, water, and salt. The dough is baked or cooked on a griddle or in some instances fried. Unleavened breads can be flatbreads or loaves and come in many different forms including matzo, Indian chapati, Ethiopian injera, Mexican tortilla,. I do not include any breads in my Daniel Fast.

  • Herbs and spices. All fresh and dried herbs and spices are permitted and encouraged as flavor enhancers, though salt should be used sparingly. For centuries, herbs and spices have been used to enhance the flavors of food. By using fresh or dried herbs and spices in recipes, you can create dishes that are healthier, tastier and more beautiful. You may find you like the taste of vegetables with minimal additional spices.

  • Beverages. Water should be your main beverage. Unsweetened plant beverages such as 100% fruit juice are permitted in small amounts, but are not recommended. Water is essential to any diet. Our bodies need water to function properly and if we do not drink enough, our bodies will send us signals such as thirst, headaches and fatigue. Water also helps with weight control as it fills up your stomach and curbs your appetite.

  • Vitamins and supplements. All are permitted as needed. If you use protein powders, they should be minimally processed and meet the diet’s guidelines. For the past few decades, Americans have been obsessed with diet. In recent years, Americans have been consuming more protein supplements and many people see it as the key to a healthy lifestyle.

What is not allowed on a Daniel Fast?
