Practicing Poverty to Minimalism

Definition of poverty and minimalism, why practice poverty?
Poverty is a state of being without the basic necessities to survive. It is not having enough money or resources to live.
Poverty can be voluntary or involuntary, and it can be temporary or lifelong. Poverty can also be a result of an economic system that does not provide for everyone’s needs and wants.
Minimalism is the practice of living with only the things you need, in order to have less clutter and live more simply and efficiently.
Some people practice poverty as voluntary poverty, by choosing to live on very little money so they are able to do more with their time than make money. Other people are involuntarily impoverished because they cannot afford basic necessities like food and shelter, which makes them unable to work.
Why I Decided to Practice Poverty for a Month
It is not uncommon to see people who are living in poverty make a decision to stop consuming, or stop buying things they don’t need. I wanted to understand the reasoning behind this decision and why it has such a positive impact on their life.
I am a college student, and I decided that for one month, I would practice poverty. In order to do this, I had to take on the mindset of someone who was living in poverty. This meant that I could not buy anything other than food and basic necessities like soap and toothpaste.
What are some benefits of practicing poverty?
Practicing poverty is a way to make sure that we are not taking for granted the privileges that we have. For example, people living in poverty may not be able to afford the clothes that they want or buy food for themselves.
Practicing poverty means being more grateful for what you have and understanding how fortunate you are.
Some people might think that practicing poverty is a waste of time because it doesn’t change anything but it does change the way people see their lives and how they live them.
What is Poverty and How Does it Differ from Materialism?
Poverty is a state of deprivation in which basic human needs are not met. It is a lack of money, food, shelter and/or education. Poverty can also be defined as the state of being inferior in quality or status.
Materialism is the pursuit of possessions and wealth for their own sake. It often involves the excessive accumulation of material goods and money.
For the past 75 years (after the end of WWII), America has been on a binge of more, leading to McMansions, debt, overspending, and obesity. Only in America can those living below the poverty line have air conditioning, iPhones, money for junk food, and $200 sneakers.
The party’s over. But most do not know it yet.

In today’s society, people are raised with the idea that more is better. They are told to work hard so they can have more money and buy more things. This leads them to a life of stress, anxiety, and unhappiness.

Why I Regret Practicing Poverty and What I Learned from the Experience
I learned the importance of a strong support system, and that no matter how hard you work, there are always going to be people who have it worse.
I was raised in poverty. I grew up in a family where my parents were working two or three jobs just to make ends meet. I had to learn to live with the constant fear of not having enough money for food or rent. And when I started practicing poverty, I realized how much it affected me as a person. Poverty is not just about not having money; it’s about the way you view yourself and those around you.
I don’t regret practicing poverty as I do the guilt from a wake up call on how much of our lives we waste chasing luxury that does not make us happy.
